I do a lot of book blurbs and short reviews in a given year. If that’s something that interests you, here are my basic rules for that.
- I am really protective of my reading time, so I only read something if I want to. I tend to focus on books from the past 2 to 3 years, because I like to be current. I read mostly science fiction, but also read some fantasy and some mystery.
- When I like books, regardless of how or why I’m reading them, I talk about them on my blog, to my friends, and on twitter.
- I read 30 to 40 books a year, with about a third of them being in audio format. I’m always open to receiving ARCs/Galleys/Early Copies, but that’s not a guarantee that I’ll read them.
- If you do request for me to read, please give me your desired timeline (which is also not a guarantee that I’ll make it, but I’ll definitely consider it in my decision).
- I only blurb/review/promote books that I like and that I can honestly recommend to people. For this reason, once you send it to me, I prefer that you don’t ask about it again. Because it’s awkward if I have to tell you that I read it but I didn’t like it. I prefer to keep it nebulous…maybe I just didn’t read it. Agents or editors are welcome to ask, because that’s less awkward.
- I tend to focus mostly on traditionally published books from the major publishers. I do this because part of the fun of reading for me is being able to talk to my friends and the community at large about books that we are all reading, and those are the books that tend to be in the conversation. I also vote for the Nebulas and the Hugos, so I try to read the books I’m likely to see on those ballots. With that said, I do try to read 3 or 4 indie/small press SFF books a year. So I’m open to those, though I do tend to pick them via referral from people I know (due to the wide variance in quality of self-published books). But you are welcome to ask.
- I love audio books, and I never have enough, so if you’ve got an audio copy available, that gives you a better shot at me getting to it.
- How to request a blurb/review
a. If you’re an agent or editor or publicist, all the standard ways are fine. You can contact me through my agent, Lisa Rodgers, or, if you know me/have my contact info you can contact me via whatever means you have available. Twitter DM is fine, email, or via the contact form on my site. I don’t have a preference when it comes to electronic or paper copy. Either is fine. Just please don’t direct me to netgalley or edelweiss, because they always seem to reject me (unless I’m pre-approved).
b. If you’re an author, you can contact me via the contact form on my site. Please include a pitch for the book, and I’ll respond to tell you if I might be interested and where to send an electronic copy. I prefer kindle format, but will occasionally work with other formats if that’s all you’ve got. If you are an author with a major publisher, you can also put your editor/publicist in touch with me to work out delivery.
